Jesus - The Real Star of Christmas

"Now, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod, the King, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem saying, 'where is He that is born King of the Jews, for we have seen His star in the east, and are coming to worship Him'." -Matthew 2:1-2

Who is the real star of Christmas - Santa Claus or Jesus Christ? What is the real spirit of Christmas; revelry, drunkenness, commerce or love, joy and on earth peace among men?

What is the real message of Christmas; a temporary cease-fire in time of war? A thaw in international tensions? Giving gifts to patch up deteriorating relationships or permanent change in individual hearts by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour?

Who are the real wise men - the Gracchi or the Magi? Those who seek solutions to their problems by conferring with one another - on the horizontal plane - like the ancient Gracchi? Or those, who like the Magi approach God - on the vertical plane - for supernatural answers?

St. Nicholas was indeed an historical person who made an impact on society by giving unselfishly to the poor and needy. He, however, is not the star attraction of Christmas.

The real star of Christmas is Jesus Christ – Whose birth we commemorate –because of the ‘Gift of Eternal Life’ which He gives to all who make room for Him in their heart of hearts!

The guiding star was a supernatural sign from God - to the magi testifying to the supernatural event taking place...God's Son being incarnated in human flesh!

Seven hundred years earlier, the prophet Isaiah stated that a virgin would conceive and bring forth a Son called Emmanuel - meaning "God with us". “Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: “Behold a virgin shall; conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Emmanuel. (Is.7: 14)

The ‘Real Spirit of Christmas’ should be one of peace, joy, love and humility as we bow before Him in worship and adoration. We should begin our giving by submitting ourselves to His lordship.

Christmas is not a time for revelry, drunkenness and greed, but of sobriety, generosity and kindness.

The message of Christmas is one of goodwill - teaching mankind to embrace the life of God - which brings lasting peace; unlike the pseudo-peace that comes from deceptive New Age teachers with their transcendental meditation, spirit guides, yoga, channeling and spiritualism!

The real wise men are those who like the magi, seek Jesus Christ and find in Him the answers to their problems!

The Gracchi's political philosophy was in competition with the spiritually oriented beliefs of the Magi. And the danger in our society is a drift toward secular humanism! "The trouble today is that we are trying to horizontalize the world".

MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE - celebrated writer and broadcaster - wrote: “Christ is the only answer to an insane world. They will not understand that the trouble with the western world civilization is not economics, but more - good and evil! “They are thinking they can make things work by policies, inventions, but man will never live on this planet without God!”

BLAISE PASCAL warns, “If they turn away from God, one of two things can happen. They will think they are gods and go mad or turn to carnality and become animals”.

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW stated, “I am ready to admit after contemplating the world and human nature for sixty years, that I see no way out of the world’s miseries but by the way that would be found by Christ’s will”.

WILLIAM GLADSTONE, Prime Minister, statesman and one of Great Britain’s greatest legal minds during the 19th Century, said: “Talk about the questions of the day! THERE IS BUT ONE QUESTION, AND THAT IS THE GOSPEL. That can and will correct everything!

A Blessed and Merry Christmas to each one! May the light of Jesus Christ’s love shine in all our hearts now and throughout the coming year!

ΕΟΡΤΑΣΜΟΣ ΕΘΝΙΚΗΣ ΕΠΕΤΕΙΟΥ ΣΤΟ ΝΙΟΥΚΑΣΤΛ

Μέσα σε μια "φορτισμένη συναισθηματικά ατμόσφαιρα"  και τούτο λόγω των τελευταίων εξελίξεων στην Ελλάδα και των δυσάρεστων εκεί γεγονότων  κατα τους Εορτασμούς της 28ης Οκτωβρίου, γιορτάσθηκε και στην πόλη του Νιούκαστλ η Εθνική Επέτειος. Με την παρουσία του Υποπροξένου κ. Ζήσση Ανδρέα Αντωνιάδη και της ευγενεστάτης συζύγου του κας Ιωάννας, του Προέδρου της Ενορίας-Κοινότητος κ. Φώτη Μαρκεζίνη και Μελών του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου, Μαθητών του Ελληνικού Σχολείου με τις Διδασκάλισσες κα Νεκταρία Αρβανίτη-Dobing και κα Μαίρη Καλλίγερου και πλήθους Ομογενών, το πρωί της Κυριακής 30ης Οκτωβρίου 2011 μετά το πέρας της Πανηγυρικής Θείας Λειτουργίας, τελέσθηκε η Δοξολογία για την Εθνική Επέτειο, εν συνεχεία η Επιμνημόσυνος Δέηση για την "Ανάπαυση των Ψυχών των υπέρ της Πατρίδος Πεσόντων" και στο τέλος της όλης Τελετής έλαβε χώρα η Κατάθεση Στεφάνων.

Στο εντός του Ιερού Ναού απέριττο και σκεπασμένο με την Ελληνική Σημαία και την ακοίμητο Κανδήλα Μνημείο-Κενοτάφειο, κατέθεσαν Στεφάνια Τιμής και Ευγνωμοσύνης στη Μνήμη των Ηρώων του Σαράντα, εκ μέρους της Ελληνικής Πολιτείας, ο Υποπρόξενος κ. Ζήσσης Αντωνιάδης, ο Πρόεδρος της Κοινότητος κ. Φώτης Μαρκεζίνης μετά της Συμβούλου κας Αγγελικής Αλούπη εκ μέρους της Ενορίας-Κοινότητος των Αγίων Αποστόλων, εκ μέρους της Γυναικείας Επιτροπής η Αντιπρόεδρος της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητος κα Ελένη Νικολετάτου, οι αδελφές Σοφία και Ελένη Κυριακίδη εκ μέρους της Νέας Γενιάς, και τέλος, η Μαθήτρια Ευαγγελία Νικολετάτου και 

ο συμμαθητής της Νικόλαος Γκανν, εκ μέρους των Διδασκόντων και Μαθητών του Ελληνικού Απογευματινού Σχολείου της Κοινότητος.

Στην ομιλία του, ο Ιερατικώς Προιστάμενος του Ναού, π. Νικόλαος Σκορδίλης, αφού αναφέρθηκε στο ιστορικό της Εθνικής Επετείου, μεταξύ άλλων είπε και τα εξής¨ 

"H σημερνή κατάσταση που ταλαιπωρεί την Πατρίδα μας, και τα απαράδεκτα γεγονότα των τελευταίων ημερών που όλοι παρακολουθήσαμε να συμβαίνουν στην Γενέτειρα μας, δεν είναι η εικόνα του ευγενούς και υπερήφανου Λαού που ξέρουμε.  Πόσο αλήθεια διαφέρουν αυτές τις ημέρες, σε όλα τα σημεία της γής, τα δημοσιεύματα στον Τύπο για την σημερινή Ελλάδα και τους Ελληνες, από εκείνα που έγραφαν για το λαό μας, εκείνες τις ημέρες της δόξας. Τον Δεκέμβριο του 1940 για παράδειγμα, στο Περιοδικό TIMES της Νέας Υόρκης με τον τίτλο "δεν θα περάσουν", δημοσιεύθηκε άρθρο, ανεφερόμενο με θαυμασμό και κατάπληξη στην ανδρεία των Ελλήνων, που σταμάτησαν τις Στρατιές των Εισβολέων.  Σήμερα, περισσσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά και από κάθε άλλη εποχή, σήμερα που η Πατρίδα μας αντιμετωπίζει μια καινούρια και πρωτοφανή στην Ιστορία Της δοκιμασία, σήμερα ας κάνουμε σύνθημα στη ζωή μας τη φράση: "Δεν θα περάσουν".  Και ας μην αφήσουμε ποτέ κανέναν, μα κανέναν, να περάσει τα σύνορα. ούτε της Πατρίδας μας ούτε της Ψυχής μας.

Ας είμαστε υπερήφανοι για τις ρίζες μας και την Ιστορία μας και ας μην ξεχνούμε ποτέ, ότι ανάμεσα σε όλα τα Εθνη του Κόσμου, η Ελλάδα μας είναι η Αριστοκράτισσα, όχι μόνο για την παλιά και ένδοξη καταγωγή Της, όχι μόνον για τον άφθαστο, τον λαμπρό και ανεπανάληπτο πολιτισμό Της με τον οποίον εδίδαξε ολόκληρο τον Κόσμο, αλλά είναι η Ελλάδα μας η Αριστοκράτισσα του κόσμου, προπάντων, επειδή δεν έπαψε ποτέ νά βάζει την Τιμή, την Ελευθερία και την Δημοκρατία, υψηλότερα από όλα τα αγαθά της ζωής".

Στο παραπλεύρως του Ιερού Ναού Μεγαλοπρεπές Κοινοτικό Μέγαρο, αμέσως μετά το Εκκλησιατικό Πρόγραμμα, παρηκολούθησαν οι Ομογενείς σύντομη Σχολική Εορτή, και εν συνεχεία παρεκάθησαν στο πλούσιο Επίσημο Γεύμα, που το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιον παρέθεσε για το Εορτάσιμο της Ημέρας.

Theo and Margaret Goumas receive national honour

PASSIONATE Newcastle cinema identities Theo and Margaret Goumas will receive a national honour next month for their contribution to the industry.

The Society of Australian Cinema Pioneers has named the husband and wife team joint cinema pioneers of the year.

They will be presented with the award at the organisation's 78th anniversary dinner on Friday, November 18, at the Swissotel Sydney.

"Theatre meant a lot in our lives. We were gratefully adopted by the local Newcastle community and they expressed their appreciation by supporting all our cinemas," Mr Goumas said.

Originally from Sydney, the Goumases began in the industry more than 45 years ago when they opened the Newcastle Roma in April, 1966.

They were responsible for a number of cinema "firsts" in Newcastle, including the first airconditioned theatre, introducing subtitled films to a Hunter audience and bringing the first R-rated film Bedroom Mazurka to the region in 1972.

During the 1970s, they operated three successful cinemas in Newcastle - the Roma, Kensington cinema and The Lyric.

They then spent 11 years operating the Showcase City Cinemas in Newcastle before GPT, which owned the premises, suddenly asked them to cease trading in May 2008.

"They said a dividing wall between us and next door was not fire-compliant and we were told to shut the doors immediately," Mrs Goumas said.

During the past three years, Mrs Goumas has become an Australian Red Cross volunteer and the couple have retired.

However they still maintain contact with film distributors, American studio bosses and friends they made during their time in the cinema industry.

"We are movie people," Mrs Goumas said yesterday.

Saint Gerasimos

Saint Gerasimos of Kefalonia (Greek: Άγιος Γερασιμός/'Gerasimos') is the patron saint of the island of Kefalonia in Greece.

Gerasimos (1506-1579) came from the aristocratic and wealthy Notaras family. He was ordained a Monk at Mount Athos, went to Jerusalem for 12 years, spent some time in Crete and Zakynthos and in 1555 arrived on Kefalonia. He spent his first 5 years in a cave in the area known as Lassi. He subsequently cultivated the area where the monastery of Saint Gerasimos now exists near Valsamata. The monastery which he established cared for the poor and became a center for charity.

Saint Gerasimos is believed by natives of Kefalonia to protect them and to also heal them of illness. Many natives of the island name their children after Saint Gerasimos as a tribute to the saint who protects them.

The body of Saint Gerasimos is guarded and protected in a glass casement at the monastery as it has never decomposed. After his death, his body was buried twice and exhumed intact, thus leading the church to ordain him as a saint. Kefalonians throughout the world still revere and pray to him.

In 1953, immediately after a powerful earthquake on the island of Kefalonia destroyed 90% of the island, there were many sightings of Saint Gerasimos throughout the island who is believed to have comforted and tended to the injured trapped inside homes and buildings.

During the feast of Saint Gerasimos on August 16th, his body is passed over ill and sick persons for the purpose of healing them. His body is also displayed by the church during liturgy at the monastery on many occasions.

A church named after Saint Gerasimos was established in New York City by Kefalonians who emigrated to New York in the early 20th century.

Με μιά σεμνή Τελετή και μέσα στο ζεστό και όμορφο περιβάλλον που πάντοτε δημιουργείται στο εντυπωσιακό Ελληνικό Κοινοτικό Μέγαρο του Newcastle, την Τρίτη 2 Αυγούστου 2011, η Ενορία και Κοινότητα των Αγίων Αποστόλων τίμησε με την απονομή Τιμητικής Πλακέτας το ζεύγος Γεωργίου και Ροζάννας Ραυτοπούλου -RAFTY- για την προς την Εκκλησία και Κοινότητα πολύτιμη οικονομική και ηθική συμβολή τους. Ο κ. Γεώργιος Ραυτόπουλος, γνωστός στην Παροικία και επιτυχημένος Κτηματομεσίτης, ειναι γιός του αείμνηστου Τζανέτου Ραυτοπούλου με καταγωγή το πανέμορφο ομηρικό Νησί του Ιονίου, την Ιθάκη, και της κας Σίας Ραυτοπούλου.

Κατά την απονομή, στην οποίαν παρευρέθηκαν, ο Αιδ. π. Ευθύμιος Λαμπρόπουλος, ο Πρόεδρος κ. Φώτης Μαρκεζίνης, ο Αντιπρόεδρος κ. Χριστόφορος Κέντρος, η Γραμματέας κα Λουίζα Πετρίδη, Μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου και ικανός αριθμός Συμπαροίκων, ο Ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενος π. Νικόλαος Σκορδίλης, εξέφρασε και δημοσίως της ευγνωμοσύνην όλων προς το ζεύγος Ραυτοπούλου, και τους συνεχάρει για την γενομένην προς αυτούς Τιμήν. Επήνεσε επίσης την θετική παρουσία τους στην ζωή και την δράση της εδώ Παροικίας, και τόνισε την μεγαλύτερη από όλες τις μέρχι τώρα επιτυχίες τους, την δημιουργία της όμορφης Οικογένειας τους, και την παραδειγματική προσπάθεια τους για την σωστή ανατροφή των τριών ανήλικων παιδιών τους. Συγκινημένοι αλλά και έκπληκτοι από την απρόσμενη αυτή τιμή, ο κ. και η κα Ραυτοπούλου εξέφρασαν τις ευχαριστίες τους προς τον π. Νικόλαο και τον κ. Μαρκεζίνη, με την διαβεβαίωση ότι θα συνεχίσουν να συμπαρίστανται στο μεγάλο και τόσο υπεύθυνο έργο της Ενορίας-Κινότητος και να συμβάλλουν όσο τους επιτρέπουν οι δυνάμεις τους, στην επιτυχία του.

Μετά την Τελετή παρεκάθησαν όλοι στην Νηστίσιμη Τράπεζα και πέρασαν ακόμη μερικές όμορφες στιγμές, γευόμενοι τις καταπληκτικές για μιά ακόμη φορά επιτυχίες της Κουζίνας, αλλά και την μεταξύ τους συναναστροφή, που είναι τόσο αναγκαία και τόσο πολύτιμη για όλους τους Συμπάροικους.

Θαύμα Αγίας Μαρίνας! Ενα απίστευτο περιστατικό!

Πολλές φορές στην ζωή μας, σαν συνειδητοί Χριστιανοί, επικαλούμεθα τον Θεό και τούς Αγίους Του. Αυτό λοιπόν έκανε και μια οικογένεια από την Κύπρο, γνωστή από τις τηλεοπτικές εκκλήσεις της πριν δύο χρόνια, για την εξεύρεση δότη προκειμένου να βρεθεί μόσχευμα για εγχείρηση στο μικρό παιδί τους, τον Ανδρέα που έπασχε από λευχαιμία. Μόσχευμα βρέθηκε και οι γονείς ετοιμάσθηκαν για να ταξιδεύσουν στις ΗΠΑ, όπου θα γινόταν η λεπτή χειρουργική επέμβαση μεταμόσχευσης μυελού.

Όλοι θυμόμαστε τότε την αγωνία της οικογένειας του Βάσου Βασιλείου από τη Λεμεσό και τις καθημερινές εκκλήσεις τους στον Χριστό μας για να σώσει το παιδί τους.Πριν λοιπόν ξεκινήσουν για την εγχείρηση οι γονείς άκουσαν για τα θαύματα της Αγίας Μαρίνας και πήραν την πρωτοβουλία να τηλεφωνήσουν στο μοναστήρι τής Αγίας Μαρίνας στην Άνδρο και να ζητήσουν την ευλογία Της.

Στο τηλέφωνο ο ηγούμενος της Μονής αρχιμανδρίτης Κυπριανός υποσχέθηκε πως θα προσευχηθεί στην Αγία και ευχήθηκε στους γονείς να έχει το παιδί την Αγία Μαρίνα στο χειρουργείο για βοήθεια. Πράγματι με την ευχή του ηγουμένου Κυπριανού στις αποσκευές τους και με ακράδαντη την πίστη για τη βοήθεια της Αγίας Μαρίνας οι δύο γονείς και ο μικρός Ανδρέας μετέβησαν στις ΗΠΑ.

Μετά τις καθιερωμένες προκαταρκτικές εξετάσεις προετοιμασίας ο μικρός Ανδρέας εισήλθε για την πραγματικά πολύ σοβαρή και λεπτή εγχείρηση.

"A few years ago [in 2000], a family from Lemessos, Cyprus, named Vassiliou received the following miracle. In Greece they are well known from the televised requests they made in order to find a donor for their young boy Andrea, who suffered from leukemia. The donor was indeed found and the parents began preparing for their trip to Texas, U.S.A where the bone marrow transplant was going to be performed. Meanwhile, they also prayed and begged Jesus Christ to save their boy. Before they left for the U.S.A the parents heard of St. Marina's miracles and they called the monastery of St. Marina located on the island of Andros in Greece to ask for her blessing. The Elder of the monastery, Archimandrite Fr. Cyprianos promised that he would pray to St. Marina. He also wished the parents for St. Marina to be with Andrea in the operating room, to help him. With Elder Cyprianos' blessing and with strong faith that St. Marina would help indeed, the Vassiliou family went to the U.S.A.

After the necessary pre-operation tests that Andrea had to undergo, he was taken to the operating room. A short time before the operation was to begin, a woman came to see the surgeon who would be operating on Andrea. She said that she was Andrea's doctor and asked to be allowed to observe the operation. The conversation that ensued proved that the woman was indeed a doctor. However, the surgeon replied that 'outside' doctors were not permitted to be present in the operating room and that his medical teams' policy was that no doctor other than those on the team be involved in such delicate operations. The persistence of the woman however, convinced the surgeon to allow her in the operating room. But before, he asked her to leave her coordinates [presumably, credentials] at the administration desk. The unknown doctor did as told and then entered the operating room with the surgeon. During the operation, she gave several directions regarding the progress of the procedure. The operation went well and in the end the surgeon thanked the woman and exited the operating room.

ΕΠΙΣΗΜΟΣ ΕΟΡΤΑΣΜΟΣ ΣΤΟ NEWCASTLE

(OFFICIAL CELEBRATION IN NEWCASTLE)

Με την παρουσία του Θεοφιλεστάτου Επισκόπου Απολλωνιάδος, πολλών Ιερέων και πλήθους προσκυνητών γιορτάσθηκε κι εφέτος η Εορτή και Πανήγυρις των Αγίων Αποστόλων στην πόλη του Newcastle.

Στον Μεγάλο Εσπερινό την παραμονή της Εορτής, προεξήρχε ο Αρχιμανδρίτης π. Σοφρώνιος, ιερατικώς Προιστάμενος του Ιερού Ναού της Αναστάσεως του Χριστού Kogarah, συμπαραστούμενος υπό των πρεσβυτέρων π. Στυλιανού Σκούτα και π. Σωτηρίου Δραπανιώτη από το Kingsford, π. Σωτηρίου Παπαφιλόπουλου από το  Blacktown, π. Δημητρίου Γιαμαίου από το Dubbo, π. Ευθυμίου Λαμπροπούλου και του Ιερατικώς Προισταμένου του Ναού π. Νικολάου Σκορδίλη. 

Την επομένη, στον κατάμεστο από πιστούς Ιερό Ναό των Αγίων Αποστόλων, την Θείαν Αρχιερατική Λειτουργία ετέλεσε ο Θεοφιλέστατος ΕπίσκοποςΑπολλωνιάδος κ.κ. Σεραφείμ, βοηθούμενος υπό του Πανοσιολογιωτάτου Αρχιμανδρίτου π. Σοφρωνίου, των πατέρων Σωτηρίου Παπαφιλόπουλου, Δημητρίου Γιαμαίου, του Ιερατικώς Προισταμένου του Ναού π. Νικολάου Σκορδίλη και του Διακόνου π. Νεκταρίου Ιωάννου. Εψαλλαν μελωδικώτατα οι Ιεροψάλτες Βασίλειος Ψιλάκος, Μιχαήλ Ψαρομάτης και ο φοιτητής της Θεολογικής μας Σχολής Γεώργιος Βρυώνης. Στην ομιλία του ο  Θεοφιλέστατος αναφέρθηκε στην Αποστολική Διαδοχή μέσα στην Εκκλησία και στην προσφορά των Αγίων Αποστόλων σε ολόκληρη την Οικουμένη. 

Μετά το πέρας της Θείας Λειτουργίας ο Θεφιλέστατος εκ μέρους του Σεβασμιωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου Αυστραλίας κ. κ. Στυλιανού τίμησε με ειδικήν Ευαρέσκειαν τον εκ Κεφαλληνίας καταγόμενον κ. Αγγελον Νικολετάτον, έναν εκ των πρωτεργατών της Ενορίας/Κοινότητος των Αγίων Αποστόλων, ο οποίος για πενήντα και πλέον χρόνια προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του στην Εκκλησία και στον Ελληνισμό της Περιοχής. Μιά τιμή που με ικανοποίηση δέχθηκαν και με ενθουσιασμό επικρότησαν οι Ομογενείς της πόλεως που για δεκαετίες παρακολουθούν την πολύτιμη και πολύπλευρη προσφορά του κ. Νικολετάτου στην Εκκλησία και στην Ομογένεια. Ο Θεοφιλέστατος αφού συνεχάρη τον τιμηθέντα, δεν παρέλειψε να εκφράσει και την ικανοποίηση του προς το Διοικητικόν Συμβούλιον της Ενορίας/Κοινότητος που στην πλειοψηφία του απαρτίζεται από νέους και νέες της νέας γενιάς, συγχρόνως όμως να τους τονίσει ότι δεν θα πρέπει ποτε να ξεχνούν τους αγώνες και τις θυσίες των προηγουμένων Διοικητικών Συμβουλίων και την ανεκτίμητη συμβολή τους στην πρόοδο της Ενορίας/Κοινότητος. 

Στο παραπλεύρως του Ιερού Ναού Κοινοτικόν Μέγαρον, πλούσια Τράπεζα περίμενε όλους τους προσκυνητάς, στην οποίαν παρεκάθησε ο Θεοφιλέστατος και η συνοδεία του. Η ικανοποίηση του Θεοφιλεστάτου ήταν για μιά ακόμη φορά εμφανής στο πρόσωπο του βλέποντας τους ομογενείς να τον πλαισιώνουν με τόση αγάπη και σεβασμό, και να θέλουν όλοι να φωτογραφηθούν μαζί του, ιδιαιτέρως δε το Νέο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο υπό την Προεδρία του κ. Φώτη Μαρκεζίνη.

Μετά το πέρας της Γιορτής ανεχώρησε και ο Θεοφιλέστατος με την συνοδεία του. Με συγκίνηση Τον αποχαιρέτησαν οι Ομογενείς, με την παράκληση όπως ακόμη μια φορά μεταφέρει στον Σεβασμιώτατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ. Στυλιανό την αφοσίωση και στοργή του Κλήρου και του Λαού της Ενορίας-Κοινότητος των Αγίων Αποστόλων Newcastle.

His Grace the Bishop Seraphim once again visiting our Parish on 30th June, Feast Day of the Holy Apostles, our Patron Saint

On Thursday, 30th June, Feast Day of the Holy Apostles, Patron Saints of our Community, we will have once again, the joy to welcome in our Church His Grace Bishop Seraphim.

His Grace will visit our Parish on behalf of His Eminence, Archbishop STYLIANOS, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia.

The Bishop will celebrate the Divine Liturgy in our Church and will preach the Gospel. Following the Liturgy, His Grace, the visiting Clergy and the congregation will move to the Community's Centre for lunch. Once again His Grace is looking forward to meet as many as possible from the people of our Parish and especially the Members of Committee.

Please be in Church the latest by 9.30 am, and invite to this special event all your relatives and friends.

Born in 1949 in Athens. After the completion of his secondary education at Halandri of Attica, he attended and studied Theology at the University of Salonika. He continued with post-graduate studies at the faculty of Practical Theology at the same University.

He was ordained Deacon in 1975 and priest at the end of the same year, serving for four years at the Holy Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain.

In 1980 he was appointed to the Holy Metropolis of Nea Krini and Kalamaria, where he served for six years as parish priest of the Church of Saint Paraskevi.

In 1986 His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia invited him to the Fifth Continent and appointed him parish priest at the Archdiocesan Church of St. Eustathios, next to His Grace the Assistant Bishop of Derbis Ezekiel, in Melbourne.

On the 12th of March 1991 he was unanimously elected a Bishop, with the honorary title of Apollonias. He serves in the First Archdiocesan District of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, based in Sydney, as Assistant Bishop to the Archbishop.

After many years of hard work and fundraising, and with the support of all the Greek Orthodox Australian faithful of NSW and other States, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia has been developing two Monasteries on the Central Coast of NSW: Pantanassa Monastery at Mangrove Creek and Holy Cross Monastery at Mangrove Mountain. At the time of acquiring these lands, the construction of a monastery, including a church was permissible within the current zones, and on this basis the lands were acquired and the monasteries planned.

NOW, Gosford Council is proposing to eliminate "places of public worship" from the zones on which the Monasteries are located under its "Gosford Draft LEP 2009". This means that future development and expansion of the monasteries, including construction of new churches, is threatened and may not be permissible on monastery lands.

Η ΕΟΡΤΗ ΤΗΣ ΜΗΤΕΡΑΣ ΣΤΟ NEWCASTLE

Η Εορτή της Μητέρας στην πόλη του Newcastle, γιορτάστηκε εφέτος με ξαχωριστή μεγαλοπρέπεια και ιδιαίτερη χαρά, και τούτο λόγω της παρουσίας του Θεοφιλεστάτου Επισκόπου Απολλωνιάδος κ. Σεραφείμ, ο Οποίος το πρωί της Κυριακής 8ης Μαίου συνοδευόμενος υπό του Διακόνου π. Δημητρίου και του τριτοετούς Φοιτητού της Θεολογικής Σχολής του Αγίου Ανδρέου κ. Εστρατίου Μακρή, επισκέφθηκε την Ενορία-Κοιότητα των Αγίων Αποστόλων, ετέλεσε Αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία εις τον κατάμεστο από πιστούς Ιερόν Ναόν, ομίλησε και ευλόγησε τους Ομογενείς, και μετέφερε την αγάπη και τις ευχές του Σεβασμιωτάτου Ποιμενάρχου, Αρχιεπισκόπου Αυστραλίας κ.κ. ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΟΥ, πρός όλόκληρον την Ελληνικήν Παροικίαν.  Εν συνεχεία εις το παραπλεύρως του Ιερού Ναού Μεγαλοπρεπές και Επιβλητικό Κοινοτικό Μέγαρο, ο Θεοφιλέστατος προς μεγάλη χαρά όλων των παρευρισκομένων, παρεκάθησε στο Επίσημο Γεύμα, και προσέφερε άνθοδέσμες σε ορισμένες Μητέρες, την γεροντότερη, την νεότερη και τις πλέον πολύτεκνες,  στα πρόσωπα των οποίων τίμησε κάθε Μητέρα και κάθε Γυναίκα της Ελληνικής Παροικίας του Newcastle.  Εντονη ήταν στο πρόσωπο Του η ικανοποίηση βλέποντας τους ομογενείς να τον πλαισιώνουν με τόση αγάπη και σεβασμό, και να θέλουν όλοι να φωτογραφηθούν μαζί του, ιδιαιτέρως δε το Νέο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο,υπό την Προεδρία του κ. Φώτη Μαρκεζίνη, το οποίον στην πλειοψηφία του απαρτίζεται από άνδρες και γυναίκες της νέας γενιάς. Μετά το πέρας της Γιορτής ανεχώρησε και ο Θεοφιλέστατος με την συνοδεία του. Με συγκίνηση Τον αποχαιρέτησαν οι Ομογενείς και με την παράκληση όπως μεταφέρει στον Σεβασμιώτατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ. Στυλιανό την αφοσίωση και στοργή του Κλήρου και του Λαού της Ενορίας-Κοινότητος των Αγίων Αποστόλων Newcastle.

The Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Newcastle

His Grace the Bishop Seraphim of Apollonias visiting our Parish on Mothers Day!

On Sunday the 8th May, (Mother's Day) we will have the joy to welcome in our Church His Grace Bishop Seraphim. His Grace will visit our Parish on behalf of His Eminence, Archbishop STYLIANOS, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia.

The Bishop will celebrate the Divine Liturgy in our Church and will preach the Gospel. Following the Liturgy, His Grace will attend the Mother's Day luncheon and will have the time to associate with our Parishioners. He is also looking forward to meet all the New Members of our exciting and dynamic new Executive Committee.

Please be in Church the latest by 9.30 am, and invite to this special event all your relatives and friends.
